Temperature is the one conversion on this site that is not a simple multiplication. Celsius and Fahrenheit have different zero points as well as different degree sizes, so every conversion needs both a scale factor and an offset — this is why 0°C is 32°F rather than 0°F. Kelvin shares the degree size of Celsius but starts at absolute zero, the point where thermal motion stops, so it is an offset of exactly 273.15 with no scaling. The two scales cross at −40°, which is the same temperature in both Celsius and Fahrenheit.
